We’ve been working on growing edible bananas for many years.  Since the banana is a “luxury consumer” of pottasium, and since we believe we have a lot of pottasium in our wash water, we decided to plant some banana trees.  We dig them up before the first frost, and bring them inside.  Some years we have covered them with burlap, and some years we have buried them with straw.  We put them back into the ground after the threat of frost has passed, and in 2009 we harvested our first crop.  About 10 pounds worth of bananas.  We bought our original banana trees from Tim Childress, an insurance agent in Sanford.  And we’ve been selling banana starts so that others can grow bananas too.
